Remove metadata from photos before you share them

Every photo your phone takes can carry extra details you can't see, like the exact spot it was taken and the phone that took it. This tool shows you what's hiding in yours, then lets you remove the metadata from the photo in one go. Choose your photo and the tool cleans it right there in your browser. It never gets sent to me or saved anywhere. It's free, and there's nothing to sign up for or join.

How to remove EXIF data and location from a photo

Drop in one photo or a whole batch. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC all work, the last one if your browser can open it. For each one you get a quick readout of what I found, such as the GPS location and the date it was taken, plus the phone make and model. Hit "Remove it all" and download them one by one or as a zip.

For everything except HEIC, the tool cuts the hidden data out rather than redrawing the picture, so your photo stays exactly the same quality. It keeps the rotation info, so nothing ends up sideways. HEIC files get saved as a high-quality JPG instead. There's a filename box too, if you'd like to swap "IMG_4821" for something descriptive while you're at it.

Before and after: the camera, lens, date and software details hidden in a photo, all stripped out by the Use Your Marbles photo metadata remover.

Why I made this.

Researchers showed years ago that the GPS data tucked inside photos can be matched with other public info to find where people live and work out when they're away. Later research found location data can give away where you live and where you work, and more besides. That stuck with me. So strip your metadata before uploading, and honestly, think twice about posting pics of your kids. UK child safety advice says the same: turn off location tagging and watch for things like school uniforms and road names.

FAQ

Do I need to sign up?

No. It's free, with no account, no email and nothing to join. Just use it.

Is it safe?

Yes. Everything runs in your browser. I don't see your photos and nothing's saved.

Do my photos get sent anywhere?

No. When you choose a photo, the tool works on it right there in your browser. It never gets sent to me or saved anywhere, and closing the page clears it. Once the page has loaded, it even works with your wifi off.

Doesn't Instagram strip this anyway?

Some platforms remove some metadata, but it's not guaranteed, and it doesn't help when you email a photo or upload it to your own website. Cleaning it yourself means you know it's gone.

Will it change how my photo looks?

Not unless it's a HEIC. For everything else only the hidden data goes. HEIC gets converted to JPG, which can change it very slightly.

More image bits

Need the photo smaller too? The image size reducer gets it under any KB limit and strips the metadata as it goes.
